Keep Shopify and eShipper open as tabs on your desktop

Updated

Open this in Talisk HQ

On the desktop app you can keep your Shopify admin and your shipping page open as tabs, in their own Web group beside Mail and the Ledger, so the working day happens in one window instead of a pile of browser tabs. These are the real websites, shown inside HQ. HQ does not read them and they do not read HQ.

Add one

The Web group is the one at the right-hand end of the tab strip, marked with a globe icon. It has no tabs until you add a site. Press the + at the end of that group, or press Cmd+T while you are on a site tab, and the Add a site window opens.

Under Your banks, the window offers one button for each bank your accounts in Ledger › Banking are at. It opens the online banking address saved on the account, or the bank's sign-in page when the account has none, so a bank with neither has no button. Choose Shopify admin (it appears when a Shopify store is connected, and opens that store) or eShipper, or pick any bank from the Your bank list, and the address and a name are filled in for you. A bank from the list opens on its sign-in page; if you sign in to business banking somewhere else, change the address before you press Add. Or type the address of any secure site, one that starts with https. Then press Add. The new tab joins the Web group and stays there the next time you open the app.

Every site you add is remembered under Your sites at the top of the Add a site window, so after you close its tab you can open it again with one click, still signed in if the site has not signed you out. If its tab is already open, the click takes you to it. Press the × beside a site to forget it; an open tab stays open. The list is kept on this computer.

You only see the Web group in a desktop app that supports site tabs. If you do not see it, update the desktop app.

You can keep TALISK_HQ's own public website open as a tab too: type taliskhq.com in Add a site. The HQ app itself cannot be a site, because it already has its own tabs, and neither can the demo. A link from the website into the app does not open inside the site tab. If the app says taliskhq.com cannot be added, update the desktop app.

On a Mac, site tabs need macOS 14 or later. Each site keeps its sign-in apart from HQ, and an older macOS cannot do that, so the app tells you so and does not open the site. Use that site in your browser instead.

Give a site a name

A site tab is named after its address by default, such as admin.shopify.com, which is long to read on a tab. The Add a site window has a Name (optional) box: type what you want the tab to say, such as Orders, up to 40 characters. Leave it empty and the tab uses the site's address. Shopify admin and eShipper bring a name of their own, which you can change before you press Add.

To change a name later, double-click the name on the tab. It turns into a box with the name selected. Type the new name and press Enter, or click anywhere else, to save it. Press Esc to leave the name as it was. To go back to the site's address, empty the box and press Enter. If you would rather use the keyboard, select the tab and press F2.

Only site tabs can be renamed. The tabs for your mailboxes and the Ledger have fixed names. A renamed site keeps its name the next time you open the app, because the name is kept with the list of sites on your computer.

Sign in once

Each site asks you to sign in the first time and then remembers you while the app is open, the way a browser does. On a Mac, Shopify and eShipper also remember you after you quit the app or update it; any other site does that only if you turn on Stay signed in for it (below). A site can ask again when its own sign-in runs out, or after you sign out of it. Your sign-in for a site is kept on this computer, apart from your HQ sign-in.

Passkeys will not work in a site tab. Sign in with your email and password, or with Google, which asks you to type your password, and add the site's 2FA code if it asks for one. If a site only lets you in with a passkey, keep that site in your browser.

The first time a site tab opens, a small window says this before the site is shown. Press OK to go on to the site, or Open in browser instead to open that site in your browser. It does not come back for that site, or for a Shopify link you open later, since that tab signs in with your Shopify tab.

On a Mac, a password manager such as 1Password can fill in a site tab, but Apple Passwords and Chrome's saved passwords cannot. The app can also save a site's password itself (below). On Windows, a site tab can remember a password you type, for that site.

Save a password (Mac)

This needs the Mac app, version 1.5.0 or later. After you sign in on a site tab, a small window asks whether to save the password, naming the account and the site. Press Save to keep it, Not now to skip it this time, or Never for this site to stop being asked on that site. If you changed a password the app already saved, it offers Update instead. Nothing is saved until you press Save.

To fill it the next time a site asks you to sign in, press Fill password in the toolbar and confirm with Touch ID or your Mac password. If you saved more than one account for that site, choose which one. Some sites ask for the email on one page and the password on the next: press Fill password on each page.

A saved password is only filled into the exact site it was saved for, so a look-alike address gets nothing. It is kept in your Mac's Keychain, with the sites of the HQ window you saved it in, and HQ never sends it anywhere. Anyone who can unlock this Mac with your Touch ID or password can fill it.

To see or remove your saved passwords, go to Settings, Account, Desktop App, Saved passwords: press Remove beside one, or Forget all saved passwords. Signing out of all sites keeps them.

In a recent Mac app the same list has Add a password and an Edit button beside each one. To add one, type the site's address (such as www.etax.gov.bc.ca), the username and the password, then press Save. Leave the username empty for a site that asks for the password alone. To edit one, change the username, type a new password, or both; leave the password box empty to keep the saved password. HQ never shows a saved password, so the box starts empty. A password is filled only on the exact site it was saved for, so add it for the address the site signs you in on. An older Mac app shows neither button and says to update the app instead: the Desktop App section of the same page shows the latest version with a Download button.

Getting around

Every tab has a toolbar that is always on screen:

  • Back, Forward and Reload.
  • Home, which takes you back to the start page of that tab. If a link has taken you somewhere you did not mean to go, press Home.
  • The real address of the page you are on, with a padlock when it is secure. Check it before you type a password.
  • Print, and Open in browser, which sends the page you are on to your usual browser.

When you download a file from a site, the toolbar says Saved with the file's name, and offers Show in Finder (Show in folder on Windows) and Print it. The file goes to your Downloads folder and never replaces one that is already there.

A link to the same site stays in the tab. A link to a different site, such as a tracking number that opens UPS, opens as a new tab beside the one you were on, with an ✕ to close it. Closing that tab takes you back to the one you came from, exactly as it was. A sign-in window that a site asks for opens as a small window of its own.

Shopify links open in HQ

With site tabs, a link to your Shopify admin can open inside HQ instead of in your browser: View in Shopify on an order or a customer, the Shopify customer chip on an email, the button in an order email from Shopify, and Change plan in Shopify.

The first time you click one, HQ asks whether to open Shopify links in HQ or in your browser. Press Open in HQ or Open in my browser, and the app remembers your answer. Press Cancel to decide later; nothing opens.

In HQ, the link opens as a new tab right beside your Shopify tab, signed in if your Shopify tab is, with an ✕ to close it. Closing it takes you back to the screen you clicked the link on. Clicking the same link again brings that tab forward rather than opening a second one. If you have no Shopify tab, the link opens at the end of the Web group, and you sign in to Shopify there once.

To change your answer, go to Settings, Account, Desktop App, Shopify links, and choose In HQ or In your browser. The choice is kept on this computer. Connecting or reconnecting a store still happens in your browser.

Stay signed in after you quit (Mac)

This needs the Mac app, version 1.6.3 or later. Shopify and eShipper keep you signed in after you quit the app. Every other site signs you out when the app quits, the way a browser does. To stay signed in to another site, such as a supplier's portal, press Stay signed in on its toolbar and confirm. A tick on the button means it is on.

Do not turn it on for your bank, or for any site that moves money. A bank treats a sign-in carried over from an earlier session as a security risk, and can refuse to let you in with a message such as "Your request was blocked for security reasons".

If a site blocks you like that, press Stay signed in again to turn it off and choose Sign out and forget. That signs you out of that one site and clears everything it stored in HQ, which clears the block; the site may ask you to confirm it is you the next time you sign in. Your other sites are not affected.

Your bank in a tab

A bank works in a site tab like any other site, but it signs you out after a few minutes of quiet, the same as it does in a browser, so expect to sign in each time you come back to it. On a Mac, save its password when the app asks, then press Fill password to sign in. If your bank remembers your card and asks only for the password, the app still offers to save it, with no username, and Fill password fills the password box. If your bank asks for a passkey, keep it in your browser.

Remove a site, or sign out of all of them

To remove a site, close its tab with the ✕. To sign out of one site and clear what it stored, turn off Stay signed in on its toolbar (above). To make every site forget you, go to Settings, Account, Desktop App, and use Sign out of all sites. Your HQ sign-in is not affected, and passwords you saved are kept.

The list of sites you added is kept on your computer. It is not stored in your HQ account, so a second computer starts with none.

Good to know: Sites in tabs are a feature of the Talisk HQ desktop app on a computer whose app is recent enough to support them. On a Mac they need macOS 14 or later. In a web browser there is nothing to add, because the browser has its own tabs. Passkeys do not work inside a site tab on a Mac, and neither do saved passwords from Apple Passwords or Chrome. Signing in with an email and password works, and so does Google, which asks for the password. On a Mac, Shopify and eShipper stay signed in after the app quits or updates, until the site itself ends the sign-in; from version 1.6.3 every other site signs you out when the app quits unless you turn on **Stay signed in** for it, which is not meant for banking sites. The app can save a site's password in the Mac's Keychain and fill it after Touch ID; that password never leaves the Mac. A recent Mac app can also add or edit a saved password in Settings, and never shows one. Talisk's public website can be added; the HQ app and the demo cannot. The banks your accounts in Ledger › Banking are at are offered first, then a list of Canadian banks, and a bank signs you out after a few minutes of quiet, as it does in a browser. Printing a shipping label from a site tab has not been confirmed, so this article makes no promise about it. HQ does not read the sites and keeps the list on the computer, not in the account. A site tab can be given a name when it is added and renamed later by double-clicking it; the name is kept on the computer with the list. Mail and Ledger tabs cannot be renamed. Links to the Shopify admin can open in a tab beside the Shopify tab, or in the browser, as the person chooses; the choice is kept on the computer. Connecting a store always happens in the browser. In a web browser Shopify links open in a new browser tab, as they always have.
