What the money card on the Dashboard shows

Updated

Open this in Talisk HQ

The Your money today card at the top of the Ledger Dashboard shows your money as of today, not for the period you have picked. Each line opens the screen that figure comes from.

  • You're owed is what your customers still owe you, the same figure as Outstanding on Invoicing › Overview, with the overdue part beside it. An invoice in another currency counts at its value in your book's currency.
  • HQ captured counts the bills and receipts HQ picked up from your inbox or your phone scans in the last 7 days. It says they are in your books only for the ones that have posted; the others are waiting for your review. The line opens Ledger › Expenses on exactly those documents, up to the newest 50.
  • Set aside for the current period names your open GST/HST filing period, for example Q3 2026 (Sep–Nov), and what that period's return would ask you to pay as your books stand today: the tax collected, less your input tax credits, any adjustments and late claims, and less the instalments you have already paid toward it. It is the balance the GST/HST tab shows for that period, unless the line says not counting the period before it. A QST registrant sees GST/HST and QST as two separate figures, as the tab shows them.
  • A second Set aside line, marked not filed yet, appears when the filing period before that one has ended and no return for it is recorded in HQ. It shows that return's balance, late claims and instalments included, and the date the payment is due, in red once that date has passed. It goes away when you Mark as filed, or record the return as filed elsewhere. While that return waits, the current period's line says not counting that period, so the money is counted once. The two figures differ on purpose: if you have filed an earlier return, the GST/HST tab on the current period adds the unfiled period's tax as late claims, because that is what the return would claim if you filed it first. Filing the period before clears the difference.
  • A Set aside line marked filed, not yet paid appears once a return is marked filed. It is the balance that return said you owe, less the payments you have recorded against it, and a QST registrant sees QST as its own figure. It opens GST/HST returns: once you Record payment for that return, its amount leaves the line. A return that ended in a refund is left out. If HQ has no saved copy of a filed return's figures and GST/HST returns does not show it paid, a line says HQ could not measure what that return still owes, rather than guessing. It opens that return on the GST/HST tab, where Record the figures you filed fixes it.
  • PST owing is the provincial sales tax your books hold for the provinces you are registered with, the current period included, until you record the payment from the bank line. It opens the PST tab. A book with no PST registration never shows it.

When you open the Dashboard, HQ first shows the figures saved on this device from your last visit, with a line above them such as "Showing what was here at 2:14 pm · Updating…", and swaps in fresh figures as soon as they arrive. If the refresh fails, the line says it couldn't refresh and offers Try again.

Both are sales tax only. For the income tax and CPP to put aside on your profit as a sole proprietor, try the free self-employed tax calculator.

That last line needs a GST number on your business, and it leaves out a period that ended before your books start: its tax is in your opening balances.

Good to know: The card reads your books and changes nothing. Its figures are as of today, not the period picked on the Dashboard. A tax figure that is zero or a refund is left out, and the card does not appear when there is nothing to show.
