Get TALISK_HQ for Mac and Windows

Updated

Open this in Talisk HQ

The TALISK_HQ desktop app is the same HQ you use in a browser, in its own window. It sits in your Dock or taskbar instead of among your browser tabs, shows the unread count on its icon, and tells you when mail arrives. Email links in other apps can open a new message in HQ, and invoices and reports print through your computer's own printing.

The first time you open HQ on a computer, once your inbox or your dashboard has loaded, HQ offers you the desktop app. The offer stays at the top of every page, through a reload, until you answer it. Download for Mac (or Download for Windows) starts the download for your computer, and Keep using the browser closes the offer for good. Either way it does not ask again.

To download it later, open Settings › Account and find Desktop App. Choose Download for Mac or Download for Windows. The sidebar also has a Get the desktop app link at the bottom until the app is installed.

To install it and open it the first time, follow the install guide. It has the steps for Mac and for Windows, including what to do if your computer asks before opening an app downloaded from the internet.

On your phone, open More and tap Email me the link under TALISK_HQ for your computer. HQ sends the download link to the email address you sign in with, so you can open it on your computer.

Don't want the reminder? Click the × beside Get the desktop app in the sidebar to hide it. It stays hidden on every browser you use. The download buttons are still in Settings › Account if you change your mind.

Text too big or too small? On a Mac, choose Zoom In, Zoom Out or Actual Size from the View menu, or press Cmd+=, Cmd+- and Cmd+0. On Windows, press Ctrl+= (or Ctrl and the plus key), Ctrl+- and Ctrl+0. Each HQ window keeps the size you choose, the next time you open the app too. On a small or low-resolution screen, such as a laptop 768 pixels tall, HQ opens the window to fit the screen and starts it a little zoomed out, until you choose a size yourself. Actual Size (Cmd+0 or Ctrl+0) always goes back to 100%. On a Mac, while a site tab such as Shopify is showing, the same keys zoom that site instead.

Updates. Once you have a version of the desktop app that updates itself, HQ checks for a new version when it opens and every few hours after that. It downloads the update in the background and shows a notification and a message saying the update is ready. Nothing restarts until you choose "Restart now" in that message; choose "Later" and HQ asks again at the next check. Send or save anything you are writing before you restart. Drafts come back when HQ reopens, but attachments do not.

Which version you have. Go to Settings, Account, Desktop App: it shows the version of the app you are using and the latest version. When a newer one is out, press the Download button and install it over the one you have; your sign-in and settings stay. On a Mac, About TALISK_HQ and Check for Updates in the TALISK_HQ menu show the same thing. Versions before 1.6.8 never told you a newer version was out, so check there if you are not sure.

Now and then, after you do something the desktop app does better in the browser (print an invoice, turn on notifications, or come back for the fifth day in a fortnight), a short line under the top of the page mentions it. Each one appears once at most, never more than one a day, and click the × on it to dismiss it. After three dismissed, HQ stops mentioning the app this way.

A day or so after you sign up, HQ may send you one email with the download link, unless you have already installed the app or chose to keep using the browser. To stop emails like it, use the link at the bottom of the email, or open Settings › Account and turn off Send me tips and offers.

Once you have used the desktop app, HQ stops suggesting it in your browser.

Good to know: The desktop app is for Mac and Windows computers. There is no desktop app for Linux, and a phone or tablet uses HQ in its browser instead. The desktop app is the same Talisk HQ you use in a browser, with the same account, books and mail; it does not keep a separate copy of anything, and it needs an internet connection like the web app does. Installing it costs nothing extra on any plan. Zooming here is the desktop app's own. In a browser, the browser's zoom does the same job, and HQ does not start zoomed out there on a small screen.
