Read your General Ledger
The General Ledger is the account-by-account trace behind every figure in your books: what each account started at, every entry that moved it, and what it ended at.
- Go to Ledger › Reports and open the General Ledger tab.
- Set the period at the top. Each account's Opening Balance is where it stood before that period began.
- Click an account header to open it. You get a row per entry, with Date, Source, Memo, Debit, Credit, and a Balance that runs down the column from the opening balance to the closing one.
Accounts are listed in account-number order. One is included when it had posted activity during the period or when it carries a balance brought forward from before it, which is why a dormant account like a shareholder loan still appears with its balance and no lines.
See what is behind a line
Click any entry row to drop down the journal entry behind it. That shows every leg of the entry, not just the side on the account you are reading, with the current account highlighted, so you can see what it was posted against. From there, View opens the document that created it (the bill, invoice, or payout) and Open in Journal opens the raw entry.
Find things
- The search box at the top matches account numbers, names and types, and also the individual entries: memo text, source, date and amount. Every word you type has to match.
- When your search matches something inside an account, that account opens on its own and lists just the matching lines, with a note saying how many of its lines you are seeing. This is the fastest way to answer "where did this $1,250 land?".
- Searching only changes which rows are listed. Opening, closing and running balances stay the account's real figures for the period, and section subtotals stay whole, so a filtered view never invents a total. Clear the box (or press Escape) to bring everything back.
- Group by type folds the accounts into Assets, Liabilities, Equity, Revenue and Expenses sections with a subtotal on each. Expand all and Collapse open and close every account at once.
Clicking an account on the Trial Balance or the Balance Sheet brings you here with that account and period already set.
Use CSV to download the report. The download is always the full ledger, not the rows a search left on screen.
Each account's net movement (debits minus credits) equals that account's figure on the Trial Balance for the same period, which is the check that the two reports agree.
